Restaurant opening on 39th and Chestnut

Posted by Jordan Osecki on 05 Jun 2008 | Tagged as: The Drexel Beat

A new restaurant, Distrito, will open this July in the University City Hub, located at 3945 Chestnut Street, according to an article in the Daily Pennsylvanian.

The restaurant will be opened by Jose Garces, the chef behind the tapas restaurants Amada and Tinto in Center City. The restaurant was originally intended to be named Chilango. It will have a green and pink Mexico City theme and will have booths shaped out of Volkswagen Beetle’s, the typical taxi type of the Mexican capital.

The menu will have modern interpretations of traditional Mexican food and the drink menu will feature over 60 types of tequila and a rotating menu of margaritas.

Stephen Starr, who also owns many restaurants in Center City, plans to open a Mexican restaurant in University City soon, but the location is yet to be determined.

Clinton to end campaign, support Obama

Posted by Jordan Osecki on 05 Jun 2008 | Tagged as: The Drexel Beat, Vote 2008

Hillary Clinton has officially ended her campaign, a push by some supporters to urge Barack Obama to choose her as the Vice Presidents, and will endorse Obama in the race for the presidency, according to an AP article posted on KYW1060.com.

Clinton is planning an event in Washington on Saturday to thank supporters and urge them to back Obama’s candidacy. However, there are others who are gearing up a campaign to pressure Obama into putting Clinton on the ticket in the number two spot.

Clinton has told close friends that she would be willing to be Obama’s running mate, but that her immediate task is to bring her own presidential bid to a close and reunite the Democratic party.

Inquirer covers “University 101″ soap

Posted by Jordan Osecki on 05 Jun 2008 | Tagged as: The Drexel Beat

The Philadelphia Inquirer has written a feature article for “University 101,” a soap opera that is written, staged, and shot entirely by Drexel students in the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. Everyone involved with the show are students except for the actors, who are pros. The show will premiere in September on DUTV, which reaches 360,000 homes in the greater Philadelphia region.

The plot will be “vapid vixens, scheming studs, blackmail, and sex.” The sets will be Drexel dorms and offices. The production is all about a learning experience for the undergraduates, a regular class with full credit. It will involve Music industry, fashion design, and interior design majors. Students in the screenwriting and playwriting program make up the scripts.
