Last Sunday, Shy Child opened up for The Faint at the Trocadero. Before the show, we sat down to talk about the tour, the mid 90’s and their favorite movie, “Clueless.”
Drex And The City: To start off, how did you two meet and how did the band form?
Pete: We met at University in the mid 90’s. I said that like an Englishman. We actually met at Wesleyan University, which is in Connecticut, in the mid 90’s. And we’ve played in lots of bands together.
Nate: Don’t forget to mention that it was in the mid 90’s.
P: Yeah, the mid 90’s. I love mid 90’s as an era. “Clueless” came out.
N: We met actually at the movie theater where “Clueless” was playing. We were both big, big fans…
P: That’s a fabrication!
N:…of Alicia Silverstone. Actually, the other girl. The one who was nerdy, but they made cool.
DATC: Brittany Murphy?
P: Brittany Murphy!
N: Brittany Murphy!
DATC: What musicians or artists do you think influence your sound?
P: Lots and lots of artists.
N: I think the real question is ‘What do you listen to on your iPod?’
P: I actually hate about 90% of what is on my iPod.
N: What have we been listening to recently? What did we listen to in the van today? Someone made us a mix of some African music—that, we liked. No Mo is one of our favorite bands at the moment.
P: We haven’t been listening to too much music lately. We don’t have an iPod hookup in the van. We burn a bunch of CDs and then they get scratched. So what are we going to do with the remaining seven hours? Listen to the non-scratched CD again?
DATC: On your latest record, “Noise Won’t Stop,” the song “Kick Drum” features local Philly boy, Spank Rock. How did you go about choosing him? Did you have him in mind when writing the song or was it a collaborative piece from the beginning?
N: We definitely had him in mind when we were writing the song.
P: We were getting that groove down and looked into him coming into the studio one day. Everyone likes him.
DATC: You’re almost done with your US tour with The Faint. It’ll be winding down tomorrow in New York. How has that been? What’s been your favorite stop on tour? Or most memorable?
P: Probably the Fillmore.
N: Yeah, the Fillmore in San Francisco. That was really good. The second show we played in LA was probably my favorite show we played.
P: Henry Fonda Theater.
N: The first week and the last week have been a blur.
P: Getting pulled over three times in one day by the cops in Arizona.
DATC: Were you speeding over to the next venue?
N: No, we didn’t have a light over our license plate, which apparently is illegal.
DATC: I saw that you performed for Stella McCartney. How did that all happen?
P: It started with an appearance on a show called the “Jools Holland Show.” Paul McCartney was on the show and we were also on it. Stella was there too. We played and then a few months later, she asked us to play that show.
DATC: I watched a few videos from “Fashion Rocks” and saw the whole musical chairs performance that you two did.
N: A highlight of my life. One of the many.
DATC: Did you get to meet Paul McCartney when you were there?
P: He gave us the thumbs up.
N: But I heard that’s his token thing with everyone. But the average Joe probably doesn’t get one.
DATC: I know that you guys just released “Noise Won’t Stop” off of Kill Rock Stars recently, but are you going to have any new singles coming out? Or plans to tour some more this year?
N: We’re working on it. We’ve spent about six months working on some new stuff. Maybe it will come out in the fall or maybe next spring. But we’ll see what happens.
P: There will be some activity.
N: You’ll be hearing from us. And I don’t mean a postcard.
P: It’ll be like the mid 90’s.
