Yo Darkroom presents karaoke party
Posted by Alysson Cwyk on 06 Sep 2008 | in: Drex and the City
It’s going to be a very rainy Saturday. So what better way to enjoy the night than to attend a karaoke party?
Yo Darkroom will be hosting the event to coincide with their newest video and performance exhibition “Empty Orchestras: Art Meets Karaoke.” “Empty Orchestras: Art Meets Karaoke” presents five artists who use the traditional Japanese pastime to express their issues of today. Tonight, you get to become a part of the experience.
The exhibit will be running now through September 13, but the party is a one-night only event. You might have a horrible voice, but who cares? It’s a karaoke party. Come sing your heart out!
Yo Darkroom (113 N. 23rd St)- September 6- 8 p.m.- FREE

Hill’s banjo tunes will keep you laughing through the whole show.

Day 5 of the Festival brings us to the start of another work week and the beginning of finals, but why not take a break for a few hours?
“His, Hers and Larry’s” is an entertaining tale about a couple attempting to live the perfect marriage-along with their obnoxious roommate, Larry. It even has a Drexel connection: Julia Curcio, playwright and co-producer of this production, is a 2006 alumnus. You can purchase tickets here.
$10, 60 minutes. Projects Gallery-629 N. Second St. Aug. 29 @ 8 p.m., Aug. 30, Sept. 6, 10, 12 @ 7 p.m., Sept. 2, 3 @ 5 p.m., Sept. 7 @ 2 p.m.

Live Arts + Fringe Pick of the Day: Car
Posted by Alysson Cwyk on 30 Aug 2008 | in: Drex and the City
It’s the second day of the Festival and what a better way to get involved than to actually interact in the performance?
“Car” let’s you do just that. Choreographer Kate Watson-Wallace has created a movement-based installation where you become a part of the action. It’s really simple:
-Purchase your ticket online.
-Head over to the garage at Fresh Grocer (40th + Walnut)
-Enter like you would with your car and see the attendant.
-Listen to the attendant’s instructions.
-Join three others inside of a car.
“Car” seems like it will be a lot of fun—just be prepared to do some walking. You definitely won’t be sitting down for long periods of time for this Live Arts show.
Purchase your tickets soon. It looks like all “Car” performances will be sold out.
$25, 60 minutes. Parking Garage #40—40th + Walnut Streets. Aug 29 + 30, Sept 5, 6, 12 + 13 (Performances begin every half hour from 7:30-10:30 pm). Aug 31, Sept 2-4, 7 + 9-11 (Performances begin every half hour from 7:30- 10 pm).

Politically-savvy quartet to play Tritone Friday
Posted by Alysson Cwyk on 27 Aug 2008 | in: Drex and the City
Are you following the DNC this week? Do you think Denver is a little too far away for you to get political? Kick off your holiday weekend this Friday at Tritone and watch The Shondes tackle some of the issues everyone’s talking about!
The Brooklyn quartet has been receiving a lot of hype since their record “The Red Sea” was released earlier this year. Check out what the media is saying about The Shondes:
“…a band bent on putting politics back in punk. Just a year out from their union in college, the foursome caught the crest of a foamy blogger-hype wave without so much as a single pressed.“ – SPIN
“Are The Shondes the next Sleater-Kinney?” – VH1 Best Week Ever Blog
“Seamlessly fusing art and politics.” – Punk Planet
“…an album rich in saw-tooth guitars, pummeling rhythms and an undeniably anthemic spirit. It’s haunting and it’s eerie, yet it’s rousing. The Shondes are a twisted carnival film noir come true.” – CMJ
Look out for a follow-up post filled with photos and video from the show. Hope to see you there!
The Shondes-Tritone (1508 South Street)-Aug. 29-10 pm-$7-21+

Shy Child open for The Faint, big fans of “Clueless”
Posted by Alysson Cwyk on 21 Aug 2008 | in: Drex and the City
Last Sunday, Shy Child opened up for The Faint at the Trocadero. Before the show, we sat down to talk about the tour, the mid 90’s and their favorite movie, “Clueless.”
Drex And The City: To start off, how did you two meet and how did the band form?
Pete: We met at University in the mid 90’s. I said that like an Englishman. We actually met at Wesleyan University, which is in Connecticut, in the mid 90’s. And we’ve played in lots of bands together.
Nate: Don’t forget to mention that it was in the mid 90’s.
P: Yeah, the mid 90’s. I love mid 90’s as an era. “Clueless” came out.
N: We met actually at the movie theater where “Clueless” was playing. We were both big, big fans…
