College presidents from about 100 of the nation’s top universities are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age 3 years to 18 years old, according to an article on NJ.com.

The movement is called the Amethyst initiative and it began recruiting presidents over a year ago to provoke a national debate about drinking age.

Proponent presidents support the initiative, saying that current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on their campuses.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving has said that lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashes. It accuses the presidents of misrepresenting science and looking for an easy way out of an inconvenient problem. MADD officials are even urging parents to think carefully about the safety of colleges whose presidents have signed on, according to the article on NJ.com.
