Prop 8: Shame on you, California!

For those of you who haven’t heard, California’s Proposition 8 has passed. What is Prop 8 you ask? It is the proposition that was on the California ballot Nov. 4 to ban gay marriage in the state, after they began recognizing these unions in June 2008. Here are my thoughts on the matter…
Shame on you California! You grant these people a right they have fought so hard to obtain only to take it away, and what for? To maintain the sanctity of marriage? To preserve family values? To protect the American way? That’s what the so-called “family value” groups would have you believe. Apparently, homosexual marriage will destroy the institution, as homosexuals are promiscuous and will likely end their marriages. Also, gay parents produce gay children furthering the gay agenda.
Something here smells sour…
Alright—if you want to protect marriage, ban gay marriage. Go for it. But ban divorce too. Make it illegal to break that eternal bond people vow themselves into. When people divorce, they take away from the sanctity of the rite, don’t they? Also, ban cheating. And while you’re at it, make it harder for people to get married so that the government is 100% sure that a couple is in love. Why not just let the church take over the whole thing?
Honestly, what is truly upsetting about this issue is that the people who care have no right to! This is a gay issue! It does not concern heterosexuals in the least bit (until they are wedding guests). It’s not as if when you establish a ban the gays are going to suddenly shrivel up and crawl under a rock. They are still gonna be around, doing their thing. They are resilient, and if anything they will move towards higher exposure to demonstrate the outrage.
Furthermore, what does it truly matter if gays can marry? What will it take away from heterosexual marriage? Will it mean less that other loving couples can be married? Is it so bad to be living next door to George and Jack Smith instead of George and Jane Smith? Honestly.
It all comes down to equity. Why should people be discriminated against on the basis of whom they sleep with? Are they making the heterosexual populace watch? No. This is supposed to be an equal-opportunity country, where each man and woman has the same rights as the next. America, you just elected a black president. Congratulations! What about the gay minority? When will their day be?

It’s truly ridiculous and I can’t wait for the day that people realize that they are making morally wrong decisions by passing these propositions such as those we saw on November 3. Unfortunately, people cannot make the realization that they are not affected by gay marriage. Moreover, people do not know the difference between the law and their own proper beliefs.
Frankly I believe that we are on the right track. However, it will still take more time. Maybe a lifetime before gays, lesbians, and bisexuals start to see equal rights in the US across the country.
I think the best thing we can do is teach our children the truth - that all people are equal and deserve the same rights. The crazy bigots weren’t born crazy bigots, they were taught to be that way. Let’s start teaching kids to believe in what is right.
