Readers react: Living in lounge space

Readers following The Triangle on Twitter offered their thoughts on a Aug 14 blog report saying that RLO will house some students in the lounges of Myers, Kelly and Calhoun Halls.  So far, our readers aren’t bothered by it…

“It’s been done before, why not do it again?  The Kelly lounges are going to make a nice dorm room,” points out a reader with the Twitter name mchoun

That’s true - students have been housed in lounge space before.  Here is a 2005 Triangle article with more info

For another Twitter follower it was the late application that made the policy acceptable.  “Converted lounge space isn’t optimal; but in fairness, it only affects students who applied for housing after the deadline,” said Twitter user dmhallowell

The Triangle got a response from RLO Assistant Director Jennifer Calvert saying she would get back to us with more details.

Some students to live in lounge space

Posted by Noah Cohen on 14 Aug 2008 | in: Editor's Desk, The Drexel Beat

Lounge space in Myers, Kelly and Calhoun Hall will be used to house some dorm residents who signed up for housing after the deadline, according to an Aug 14 email sent from the Residential Living Office management to Resident Assistants.

“We will be using 7 lounges in Myers, a lounge in each floor of Calhoun and a lounge on each floor of Kelly.  Our goal will be to move these students into permanent spaces as quickly as possible,” read the email from RLO Assistant Director Jennifer Calvert.

The lounges will hold 3 -5 additional students, according to the email.

Freshmen students will now have the same overnight guest policy as upperclassmen, according to the email. “We believe that our first-year students are adults and should have the choices that adults have,” Calvert wrote to RAs

An email sent this morning to Calvert and Executive Director of Communication for Student Life and Admin Services James Katsaounis was not returned at the time of the posting.
