Live Arts + Fringe Pick of the Day: Improv and Sketch Comedy from Rare Bird Show & Meg and Rob, respectively

Posted by Alysson Cwyk on 13 Sep 2008 | in: Drex and the City

The Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe is coming to an end, but there are still a few hours to experience the performing arts events that everyone has been talking about!

Tonight, at 10:30, make sure to check out the FUNNIEST performance I’ve encountered to date, “Improv and Sketch Comedy from Rare Bird Show & Meg and Rob, respectively.” Get your tickets here.

The two groups will make you laugh hysterically while you are in the theater and hours to follow. Here are a few video’s from Meg and Rob’s routine:

They’ve graced the stages at colleges nationwide and been deemed as favorites by Philadelphia Weekly, CityPaper and other media outlets in the area. Sounds like a good match for a Drexel student.

$10, 90 minutes. The Adrienne Mainstage-2030 Sansom St. Sept. 13 @ 10:30 p.m.

Live Arts + Fringe Pick of the Day: Sweet By-and-By

Posted by Alysson Cwyk on 03 Sep 2008 | in: Drex and the City

It’s Day 6 of the 2008 Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe. What should you check out today? Sweet By-and-By!

Photobucket

“Sweet By-and-By” is described as a “one-man, multimedia, semi-autobiographical hootenanny.” The famed Pig Iron Theatre Company tells the story of Joe Hill, a radical songwriter who is credited as inspiring musical legends such as Bob Dylan. Hill’s banjo tunes will keep you laughing through the whole show.

Order your tickets here. FAST! It looks like this show will sell out.

$25, 65 minutes. Arts Bank-601 S. Broad St. Aug. 29-31, Sept. 3, 10, 11 @ 7 p.m., Sept. 4, 5 @ 9 p.m., Sept. 6, 12, 13 @ 10 p.m., Sept. 7 @ 3 p.m.

Live Arts + Fringe Pick of the Day: His, Hers and Larry’s

Posted by Alysson Cwyk on 02 Sep 2008 | in: Drex and the City

Day 5 of the Festival brings us to the start of another work week and the beginning of finals, but why not take a break for a few hours?

Photobucket

“His, Hers and Larry’s” is an entertaining tale about a couple attempting to live the perfect marriage-along with their obnoxious roommate, Larry. It even has a Drexel connection: Julia Curcio, playwright and co-producer of this production, is a 2006 alumnus. You can purchase tickets here.

$10, 60 minutes. Projects Gallery-629 N. Second St. Aug. 29 @ 8 p.m., Aug. 30, Sept. 6, 10, 12 @ 7 p.m., Sept. 2, 3 @ 5 p.m., Sept. 7 @ 2 p.m.

Live Arts + Fringe Pick of the Day: Car

Posted by Alysson Cwyk on 30 Aug 2008 | in: Drex and the City

It’s the second day of the Festival and what a better way to get involved than to actually interact in the performance?

Photobucket

“Car” let’s you do just that. Choreographer Kate Watson-Wallace has created a movement-based installation where you become a part of the action. It’s really simple:

-Purchase your ticket online.
-Head over to the garage at Fresh Grocer (40th + Walnut)
-Enter like you would with your car and see the attendant.
-Listen to the attendant’s instructions.
-Join three others inside of a car.

“Car” seems like it will be a lot of fun—just be prepared to do some walking. You definitely won’t be sitting down for long periods of time for this Live Arts show.

Purchase your tickets soon. It looks like all “Car” performances will be sold out.

$25, 60 minutes. Parking Garage #40—40th + Walnut Streets. Aug 29 + 30, Sept 5, 6, 12 + 13 (Performances begin every half hour from 7:30-10:30 pm). Aug 31, Sept 2-4, 7 + 9-11 (Performances begin every half hour from 7:30- 10 pm).

The Philadelphia Live Arts + Philly Fringe Festival starts today! We’ll keep you updated on the shows to attend, reviews and (hopefully) some multimedia to go along.

Tonight, before going to Tritone to see The Shondes, I suggest checking out “Wawapalooza 2: Get Shorti” playing at 2nd Stage at The Adrienne (2030 Sansom St.). It’s the opening night of “Wawapalooza 2,” so head on over early to guarantee admission or purchase your tickets here.

Photobucket

“Wawapalooza 2” consists of short plays and films joking about IKEA, Wildwood, NJ, Guitar Hero addictions and the greatest convenience store of the greater Philadelphia region. Taste the local flavor!

$10, 70 minutes. Second Stage at The Adrienne-2030 Sansom St. Aug. 29, Sept. 1 @ 7 p.m., Aug. 30, Sept. 4 @ 9 p.m., Aug. 31 @ 4 p.m.
